Product description for teachers and tutors

Understanding Maths is a series of topic-based study books for children in Key Stage 2, providing rigorous practice of key subject areas. Each topic contains a concise summary of the information required by the National Curriculum, making the series ideal for use as preparation for the Key Stage 2 tests. Each book is a stand-alone resource, so children can either work through them in order or focus on individual aspects of the subject. Together, the nine books support the whole of the Key Stage 2 maths curriculum, providing a solid foundation for success in maths.

Number Patterns & Algebra meets the National Curriculum requirements for Key Stage 2 maths, and covers the following areas: factors, multiples, fraction sequences, prime numbers, odd and even numbers, negative numbers, Roman numerals, cube and square numbers, term-to-term rule, unknowns and variables, and simple algebra. The book also develops skills in recognising and explaining number patterns and sequences.

Key features of Understanding Maths include:

  • an ‘Explanation’ to introduce each topic
  • activities to consolidate and revise knowledge and skills
  • thought-provoking facts to foster a love of learning beyond the National Curriculum
  • regular ‘Progress tests’ and a ‘Final test’ to track children’s development.

All nine books in the series contain answers at the back.

My son has Aspergers Syndrome and I home school him. Despite his high intelligence level, he has a very short concentration span and these books (plus the English books) have been invaluable with large amounts of information in bite size chunks presented to my son in an interesting way. I highly recommend them for children of all abilities and ages. They are good for supported and unsupported work.

I bought the complete set of ‘Understanding Maths’ as had used the older version in the past and now needed something updated for the ‘new’ National Curriculum. I use these working 1:1 with children, in school and out, usually for ‘catch up’ and chose these as it’s handy to have topic content grouped together. I like the layout of them and the fact they are progressive but I’m a bit disappointed with some of the content which, I think, does not really go far enough for KS2 SATS. The algebra one, for example, has quite a bit on understanding formulae but nothing on calculating with them, which is the part that most children find difficult. Similarly I can’t see anything about using formulae for geometry problems (areas of shapes etc). Nothing on calculating areas of parallelograms either Even the arithmetic long multiplication has the ones column being calculated last, which is not the common current method in schools being taught. Overall they are good value for money but are probably more use for lower KS2 than upper.
